Links to Heritage Areas in New YorkThe New York State Legislature created the Urban Cultural Parks Program in 1982. In 1994, the designation was program name was changed to Heritage Areas to include larger regional areas. The Long Island North Shore Heritage Area is the first Heritage Area on Long Island. It joins 17 other Heritage Areas in New York State with more than 420 involved communities.
